Windows Xp Fan Just Runs Continuously

I have a Dell 8300 w/XP sp2 2002
4 CPU 3GHz 512 MB RAM
It runs great and have had no problems yet
But the fan has been running top speed even with nothing or very little running
It can breath
It stays clean inside and out
I have anti-virus programs and run zone alarm
I do have 62 processes but almost no CPU Usage
Any ideas on what else I can check or delete

somethings you can check is in
msconfig
then start-up items.... disable pretty much anything you dont think you need on start up...
you can use this website as a guide to know what you do and dont need...
or you can use
www.sysinfo.org and type each item in the startup item box... and will tell you if you need it or dont.....
if its the fan making the noise try getting a new fan and see if that helps any.
to get to msconfig
go to start--->run---> type msconfig in the runbox and click ok.
then click on the startup item tab and there you go.... all you really need for xp is your antivirus software.
and spyware protection programs..

Try this free temperature monitoring utility: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
It will tell you if your system is running too hot - that's the main danger here. If the fan is running because of an overheating condition, it could damage your system.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

Was there a time when it didn't?
We are talking about the cpu fan, correct?
Given that cooling fans are limited in most OEM's, I'd prefer what's ever in there run full bore.
If the fan has just started roaring, first thing I'd do is replace it.
Excessive noise could just mean the fan's half shot.

You can always install a fan controller that will slow the fans down. You just need to monitor temperatures and dust buildup in your computer. I built a computer for my kids with 8 fans in it. Without a fan controller it would sound like a jet taking off! Put a few computers like that in an office and it is too loud for folks to work!
The first thing is what the other responders have said: make sure your fans are working correctly. If they are louder than they once were they may be going bad.
Replace the fans with better ones. Major manufacturers use CHEAP components. There are quiter fans on the market.
Install a controller, but monitor your temperatures!

Many major brand computers have a fan that is speed-controlled, allowing the computer to run silently unless more speed is needed. When the computer powers on, the fan briefly runs at higher speed, and then almost immediately throttles down to a quiet speed. Whatever caused your speed control to quit should be replaced. The problem is determining whether it's a heat sensor, the fan itself, or a driver for the temperature monitoring.
